Honored as the king of Yellow teas and one of China's Ten Famous Tea, this rare and precious yellow tea was sent to Russian President Vladimir Putin as China's National Gift earlier this year (2006). The tea originates from Jun Shan Island (also known as the Island of Immortals) of Lake Dong Ting in Hunan Province. The yearly production of this tea is very limited, using only before and early Qing Ming harvest. Tea leaves picked after this period were processed into other teas such as Jun Shan Mao Jian and Jun Shan Lu Cha. Jun Shan Yin Zhen was an Imperial Tribute tea back in the ancient days, and is also well-known as Chairman's Mao favorite tea.

Other names:

Mount Jun Silver Needle

Taste:

Delicate aroma with a hint of floral notes. The taste is smooth, light and sweet at first sip but finishes with a fleeting smoky taste. This smokiness is only apparent in the first infusion and is not offensive at all. If anything, we feel that it actually adds character to the tea and makes the sweetness stands out even more in later tasting. After a few cups, you will still be able to feel the light sweetness in your mouth.

Appearance:

Jun Shan Yin Zhen consist of thick, needle-shape tea buds that look dry and almost like an aged tea. However, this is all due to the processing method - the tea is very fresh, as you can obviously tell from the taste.

Origin:

Jun Shan, Hunan Province, China

Harvest Period:

Spring 2015

Brewing Guide

1. Rinse tea cup and teapot with hot water.

2. Fill the teapot 1/2 to 3/4 full with tea leaves, or 3 grams of tea leaves for every 150ml of water if you are not using purple clay. Steep tea leaves in hot water at 85°c (185°F) to 90°c (194°F) for 1 minute for the first and second brewing.

3. Gradually increase steeping time and temperature for subsequent brewing.

* We recommend using glass-based or porcelain tea ware.

What can I say? Amazing tea, high quality, beautiful can (for 20g version). Taste and aroma are awesome. But it is very important to use proper amount of leaves, I recommend 2 full teaspoons for every 110 ml of water.

This is a top quality yellow tea. The leaves are slightly greenish yellow and it brews to a beautiful yellow color. It has a complex taste, starting sweet and ending on an earthy or slightly smoky note. This makes it a pleasure to drink as one tends to pay attention as each mouthful runs through a sequence of subtle tastes each offering contrast to highlight the other. One has the sense while handling the leaves and preparing it, as also while drinking it, that one is handling something precious which, considering the rarity of authentic Jun Shan Yin Zhen, one truly is.

This is the second batch of Jun Shun Yin Zhen i will have had this year, one of my favorite yellow teas. I find the first infusion has a beautiful sweetness to it, similar although not as strong as say the taste of a fine bai lin gong fu, but less green as in mao jian. From the 2nd infusion onwards the tea obtains a beautiful and light smoky taste that lasts well into the 4th infusion. A quality, delicate tea that actually outlasts many stronger green teas over multiple infusions.

I prefer to brew this tea on weekends in gaiwan. The aroma of dry tea is really amazing.

It is the best tea which I ever tried. I consider that completely justifies cost.

Nice to see the classic tea dance of the Jun Shan Yin Zhen, I would hope more for one more grade higher with smaller tea bud if I can afford it. This is the first time I can get the new harvest of this tea in USA. THANK YOU.

Im really glad I ordered this...I had been wondering what people meant when they said a tea had a vegetable taste. (Though whether they say that about THIS tea or not, I dont know.) Now I know! This tea makes me think of peas in both scent and taste. Its lightly sweet and earthy-vegetable. Nice colour.

This is a great yellow tea, with packaging to match its quality. Ive tried the higher-quality Cha Wang Jun Shan Yin Zhen, and honestly I think it doesnt stack up to good ol Jun Shan Yin Zhen. The leaves have such an outstanding aroma. Definitely worth a shot.

The 1st cup brewed definitely had a slight smoky taste, but the 2nd thru 4th steepings were all excellent. This is a tea to be savored.

This is really an amazing tea. The taste is mild but complex and really delightful. The golden can is beautiful too. This tea is my new favourite, well worth the price and I will buy it again.

An excellent quality and very enjoyable tea. For me though it is missing that Wow factor to distinguish it from other high quality teas and justify its price.

This tea has a Unique taste, but a Serious amount of attention has to be paid to brewing I found what works best for me is Exactly 169F and 2 tsp of leaf, brew in and drink from a gaiwan let the tea dance for 240 seconds before sipping, the unique tastes of JSYZ are earthy, vegetal, spicy and slightly smoky with a dry aroma and long aftertaste this ranks 5 stars easy.

What an aroma! The scent is very strong when you open the package. I didnt brew it quickly enough, and think I might have lost some of the flavor. Nonetheless, it was a very, very good yellow tea. Sweet. Im a little disappointed that it only comes in sample with a can and more than I can quickly work through quantities, but nonetheless it was well worth the experience.

Good price for the quality. Not too smoky like other native bush JSYZ we have had. Nice thick amino taste but not much complexity otherwise. Good for 3 infusions. Processed a bit on the green side of the yellow.

One of the freshest teas I have ever had. Smooth but complex, much to appreciate in this rare tea.

A very light colour tea. Brewed correctly, gives off a strong aftertaste that lingers.

A beautiful tea to behold, leaves look good and perfectly formed in the cup. I prefer the taste of a good green tea so I will probably not be ordering more of this kind of tea.
