Bi Luo Chun Hong Cha is made from Yunnan tea leaves (same tea leaves that are used to produce Yunnan Gold and Yunnan Pure Gold) and carefully rolled into the shape of spiral, very similar to Fujian Bi Luo Chun (Green tea). It is also the only Black tea that we know of where the tea leaves are tightly rolled. An excellent drink for the cold weather as this tea helps to keep your body warm and to quench your thirst.

Other names:

Pi Lo Chun Hong Cha, Spring Snail Shell Black Tea

Taste:

The infusion produces an amber-colored liquor that is as smooth as Aged Pu-erh tea and has a slight hint of malt flavor.

Appearance:

It is made of black and gold leaves rolled in spiral shape (similar to Bi Luo Chun).

Origin:

Yunnan Province, China

Harvest Period:

Spring 2015

Brewing Guide

1. Rinse tea cup and teapot with hot water.

2. Use about 3 grams of tea leaves (1-2 teaspoons) for every 150ml of water. Steep tea leaves in hot water at 95°c (203°F) for 1 minute for the first and second brewing.

3. Gradually increase steeping time and temperature for subsequent brewing.

* We suggest you can use purple clay or porcelain tea ware. If you like milk with your tea, add 10 ml to 15ml of sweetened/plain dairy milk and stir.

Very good introduction of black tea. This is a good black tea to try if you are unsure of black teas. I found it hard to improperly brew this tea, as it rarely bittered even if I left it in the pot. The aroma and smooth feel are very relaxing.

A very interesting black tea: the leaves rolled into snail-shaped form are visually appealing, but the real surprise is the aroma that rises just on opening the package: it reminded me of pipe tobacco, both sweet and penetrating. The liquor has a deep amber-colour and the taste is just as sweet and penetrating as the aroma. For the first 3-4 brewings the taste is still strong, and gradually fades on subsequent brewings.

This is my second go-round with this tea and I'm enjoying more and more. As the mornings become Autumn cool, a small pot of this is a wonderful way to start my day. The flavour is winey, complex and hearty with a lingering sweetness that holds well through multiple infusions. I've also taken to using the tea liquor in gingerbread recipes and in chocolate baked desserts in lieu of milk. It seems to deepen and enhance the spiciness of the treats. I expect this to become a long-standing favourite!

Smoky with a sweet undertaste. Easy to use too much, when it overpowers. Not like the pure gold or the black gold at all, even though levaes from the same bushes are used. I am going to experiment with infusing different ways.

An interesting tea! I didn't really know what to expect, since I'm so fond of Yunnan Golds. But, this tea surprised me. First, the aroma - rich, dark, leathery, slightly smokey and appealing. And then, the flavour: first infusion, fruity, with heavy woodsy overtones. Second and then on: lush, earthy, robust. A complex tea and although as guttsy as a good Yunnan Gold, not as dimensional, lacking the smooth maltiness in other Yunnan Blacks; but a good morning brew with a kick!

This lovely-to-look-at tea develops its finest flavor in the second brewing. The first brewing is a bit strong, so use less leaves if you like your tea mild and smooth like I do. I was happy to get a wonderful third brewing out of the leaves, too! ChineseTeaArt.com is one of the few places I have been able to find Bi Luo Chun, which is usually only sold as green tea. This tea is very drinkable -- cup after cup after cup. A good choice for an afternoon working on your computer.

I really like the Copper Knot Hongcha Black Tea from Tevana and since this looked similar and was cheaper I thought I would try it out. Not only does it taste fresher I get more steepings for the same amount of tea. If you like the Copper Knot you definitely need to switch to Bi Luo Chun Hong Cha.

A very nice, basic black tea. The leaves are tightly rolled into snail shell shapes, which makes the tea very compact. A good malty morning tea, it also has very distinct chocolate notes. Other online stores sell this exact same tea but for $1 or $2 more per 100g, usually calling it something like "Yunnan Downy" or "Golden Pekoe" or something like that. Same tea, but cheaper from ChineseTeaArt.

This was very good actually. Those of you familiar with Assam, this is almost exactly like it. Gives off a solid malty cup of tea with no bitterness, what makes it even better than Assam is that it can last two or three steeps and still retain the same taste.

I give it a "good"rating because I dont know many kinds of black tea - only those cheap ones. It has a really strong smell, colour and flavor, with a slightly bitter taste, but a sweet aftertaste. Very good!

Smooth malty taste, with little bitterness at all. The taste is strong and full bodied. Some fragrance, but not much. The color is a lovely deep dark red. I could not find one particular note that stood out, but it was nevertheless very satisfying. The tea leaves are fresh and well-prepared. Wonderful ability to infuse over and over again. Although the first infusion was the best, I could still get good color and flavor out of several infusions. A quality product offered at a bargain price. Highly recommended.
